In April, Corporal Robert Brooks and Sergeant Major Tim Anderson had the honor and pleasure of visiting the beautiful Capitol of the Tarheel State, Raleigh, North Carolina. The Corporal and Sergeant Major were treated to a tour of the North Carolina Museum of History by officials Tom Belton, Curator of Military History and R. Jackson Marshall III, Associate Director of Programming. During the visit, Mr. Belton and Mr. Marshall described the important work and mission of the museum. Of most recent and particular interest is the museum's goal to preserve and maintain its' irreplacable collection of North Carolina Battle flags that were displayed and guarded by Tarheel units during the War Between the States. These banners have thus far survived the ravages of war and of time, but are in desperate need of maintenance and preservation. The museum receives no state funding for this project and must rely on donations to fund this preservation of Confederate history and heritage. For example, under one banner alone, it is believed no less than eighteen soldiers sacrificed their lives to protect the colors. Anderson and Brooks told Mr. Belton and Mr. Marshall that on behalf of the members of the 22nd North Carolina they wished to contribute both time and financial support to the efforts of this mission. These efforts include restoration and preservation of the 22nd North Carolina Battle flag. This banner was captured behind the Union line during the Pickett-Pettigrew Charge at Gettysburg. Corporal Brooks presented a check for $500 to the museum on behalf of the 22nd members. This check will be the first of more to come, the 22nd will be assisting in further North Carolina flag preservation projects as well. It is extimated that about $7,000 to $8,000 is needed to fund the restoration of each flag and ensure its' preservation for future generations. Each flag has a story to tell. Each story shares in common a great history of honor, pride, sacrifice, patriotism and undaunted courage.
